Ah

I got a student today. I was worried he was going to be a social retard, but he's actually quite cool. I showed him the lab, explained protocols to him, and went to a barbeque with him. It was awesome.

i have a student too!

i guess you could argue i have 21, since that's how many are in the class i ta. i just got the evaluations that i will be handing out tomorrow. at first, i was really excited, because i think i've been a kickass ta, but then i got scared. last week in lab i was explaining what the lab exam was going to be like and this chick said, "what, we have to know the family and genus name for ALL the fish? you never said that, you said we just had to know the common name." other students came to my defense and said that i had indeed told them about the latin names required for the fish, but this chick would not let it go and so i finally said, "well, it doesn't matter because the test is written and this is how it's going to be."

i was like david sedaris laying down the law by saying he was the only person in the room getting paid to be there.

not necessarily the best for being evaluated by students, tho.

I've heard teachers say things that indicate they are worried about their evaluations they get. Why worry? Does it imact you, like affect your salary or if you get fired or something? I mean, I wouldn't want students hating on me, and, telling me I didn't do a god job, I'm just currious if its more than that.

the evaluations go in your employee file and may make a difference when i try to get people other than my advisor (whom i teach for and who doesn't give a shit what the students say 'cause he knows i'm good) to write letters of recommendation for me when i want to be a real professor.

i'm also just in a master's program right now and i suppose it could, in some way, effect funding for my ph.d. (like they wouldn't give me any ta-ships to fill gaps in funding).

if you're a real teacher and not just a ta, you could get fired if they were bad enough, i suppose. course, no one who has tenure gives a fuck, 'cause hey, they've got tenure.

Wow, do the students know they have such power? I hope not... They probably do too. I was oblivious writing those things. I just filled in the circles, whatever.

I went mountian biking yesterday, and almost everyone else on the trail was decked out in thule gear. I thought I moved back to the midwest where that crap wasn't so prevalent...
